Completelt irrelevant title other than I saw it on a menu yesterday and thought it was hilarious. Don't know if that's actually the swahili word (swahili is fantastically phoenetic) or a really good spelling mistake. I liked it though.
Anyway back to business. Finally manages to leave Zanzibar (though it was a bank holiday so immigration office was closed- according to my passport I'm still there. Though according to my old on I think I'm still in Macedonia). I say finally because I think it was the longest day of my life. We got up ridiculously early to get on a bus to take us to get a boat at 10 but because it'd started raining amd the wind was the wrong sort (?!) we had to wait. And wait. And wait. Eventually got a boat out at 4. We had to stop halfway across because now the wind was the right sort but there was too much of it (ever seen a windsurfer turning cartwheelly type things-we didn't feel like doning that). It was dark and it rained. A lot. We had out trustly plastic sheeting though didn't get too wet. And the crossing was a lot comfier than the first one-this time the cargo was sugar which is a lot les lumpy than charcoal. Got to the mainland at aronund 11 I think. I tell a lie, we didn't yet to the mainland, we got about 10 meters away from the land and because the water was deep and cold we paid a guy to carry us across to the mainland. That definately scores me poiunts if we're playing transport bingo. Human taxi-not recommended.
The port (and I use the term oh so lightly) only has one guest house which was full but luckily (again, a very loose term) the boat captain has friends there so we were provided with floor space and a straw mat. Yey. Another early morning-the only bus is at 4! All the way up to the mountains, beautiful journey if a little (or a lot) terrifying, lots of turns on a slippery mud road in a bus who's sides didn't seem to be attached to anything. I've got a considerable (though diminishing) amount of weight and nowhere really to put it. Certainly interesting though.
Now we're still stuck in the mountains in a place called Bumbuli (which on all the bus signs is shortened to bum, crude I know but I've got to get my kicks somehow). It's really pretty but getting steadily less so. We wanted to go ont to a place called Mtae but it's been raining so much that no buses are daring to risk the road which is all up hill. Think the plan now is to wait until the road is a little better (the rain seems to be easing a little in that it hasn't rained yet today, though it's only lunch time and time will tell) then I go on to Dar which I'm really not looking forward too. It has little/no sewerage system so is not the nicest place to be in the rain. I theoretically could by pass it all together but it's pretty much the only place between here and Nairobi that has a cash machine. From there I'll be heading down to Malawi and then I start my journey back up again.
Tom your birthday is the day I come home so I don't need to worry about finding a cake that will withstand airmail.
Anyone know what Alex Howell's up to. It occured to me last night that he's meant to be in Mozambique at some point-or at least that was the plan last I heard. It probably isn't anymore.

Wendy your description of the journey made me laugh out loud, it is CLASSIC, wonderful. And now you are in a place called Bum trying to get to a place called Empty! This all sounds fantastic. The rain must be being sent by God because he doesnt want you running to Empty just yet. I am off to Wednesday Prayers in a few minutes, we will pray for you.
Alex Howell is indeed in Africa somewhere, but not Mozambique because of the circumstances there. Mozambique isnt awfully friendly, when Neil's ship was in port there they were advised not to even go ashore, the only place that happened and he went to some odd places. Anyway, back to Alex who is South Africa in Pietermaritzburg. I can send you details of his blog and email if you want them.
If your diary is written in the same style as this, might I suggest trying to get it published to help with uni funding. You write well, and your adventures are fun and exciting and spiritual

Hi Wendy
Just want to say it is still lovely to hear from you about your adventures. Would love to get the odd reply to texts though. Wonder if I have copied you new number correctly. Could you possibly text me and then I can save it to be certain.
Love You lots, Mum

Wendy, you made the people at Wednesday Prayers laugh as well when I told them you are in a place called Bum waiting for the rain to stop so you can go up the mountain to empty. they thought it was hilarious - they are all 80+ and really cool.
Now I am going to put on my fuddy duddy oldy lady hat. (it is yellow satin with black lace, very nice). I dont know much about where Alex is, but there are security issues about putting his email and blog details directly on here without his permission. People do browse blogs, and look for info about people and it could have security implications depending on what he is actually doing. Some of the young people from church do go to dangerous places and it is safer that their details arent broadcast without their permission. And "oh Alex wont mind" doesnt count as permission. That is why I offered to send it to Wendy offlist. South Africa isnt a high risk area as Mozambique is, but other people may go to more risky places.
I have now taken off my fuddy duddy old lady hat and replaced in the top shelf of my wardrobe, and am back to being batty. But it is important.
Sarah I will pray for you tomorrow, you will be fine tho.
thanks! I'll let you know how i goes.
*fingers crossed and praying like mad*
80+ and really cool. like it !
you paid someone to carry you across from boat to land? That's the way to travel, certainly.
Hi Wendy
What an amazing time - fantastic. I can't wait to see you in person and hear all about it. The sun is shining here and the most adventuresome thing I have done is sit outside just now to eat my lunch. this is not a good idea in the middle of the working day as I very definitely did not want to come back in. But here I am. I think though I could not have coped with the wiggly roads in the very heavy rain so I won't offer to swap with you. Not that you would swap for anything. Although maybe a chocolate bar would tempt you?
Love you lots. Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee for now.
german oral went ok it think. it may seem strange to you but i rather enjoyed that. I know i'm getting more strange by the minute. I don't remember much by now but i do know that the role play thing was kinda understandable and the conversation that i did on Behinderte in deutchland lasted for 10 mins like it was supposed to so, yeah. I don't think it went to badly at all. Bring on the next german exam! hmm, i better go and do soe more art now. You gotta love the stuff.
by the way wendy, life drawing has fnished but i haven't had the lovely experience fo meeting any of the models on the bus. :-)
Wendoline what a fantastic birthday present for me! You coming home! Your journey at the moment sounds wonderful, even if it's not the driest of them all... anyway, I have lots and lots to tell you when I return, but for now I'll leave you with the news that I have 3 job interviews lined up (and possibly another 2 in the pipeline)! So this guy's smiling tonight. Anyway, tea-time; much love to you all... adios!
Glad the German went well, I was indeed praying for you. By life drawing do you mean they dont wear anything? I am shocked, in a Roman Catholic 6th form college. Showing my age I guess.
Tonight it is philosohpy and linguistics chez Parkinson. And Lynne is doing a job application. And I called my mother and asked her to walk their doggie, Charlie, through some mud or dirt and walk him across some white paper with dirty feet because Helen needs some animal footprints of different sizes for a computer art ehancement project. This is a complete and utter fabrication. My dad is 80 in a few weeks, and I am asking all his friends and family to contribute to a book, with anecdotes and photos and suchlike. And I cant actually do this book without a contribution from his beloved doggie. And since I wont be visiting before them, I couldnt think how to get the footprint from him.
I now need to work out how to get a memory from my mum, who doesnt know about the book and will think me odd if I ask her for memories
On the whole, art coursework is sounding more interesting
Liz
yep no clothes. Art coursework interesting???! Could someone please tell me how this is interesting. By now i'm at the point of it's alot of hard work that has to be done rather quickly!
I would be hopeless at art coursework, cant draw. and would be way embarrassed at life drawing.
I think I will learn to be a bookbinder. There are hardly any craft bookbinders around, and the ones there are are really old. My usual one has retired, but have found another one, but soon they will all retire and we wont have any. So anyone looking for a crafty job in a niche market - be a bookbinder
Liz
where be our wendy????
Sarah, you arent paying attention here, (grin) she is half way up a mountain in a town called Bum, waiting for the rain to stop so the bus can take her to Empty.
Unless of course her plans have changed (grin again)
Liz
sounds about right. Didnt you know that i never pay much attention to things when i have lots of workthat need to be done. Thanks for teling me though.
what on earth is going on? It has been nice and sunny and HOT for the past three days! I'm not complaining but it just seems a little strange as i am in Manchester which doesn't tend to have lovely weather. Ahh well, so long as it doesn't get any warmer i'm not complaining. It's a nice temperature right now. I'm ignoring the fact that i have the window open. Whats the weather like anywhere else. Yes, i am bored before anyone asks!
it was nice where I live too, I was able to wear a strappy top and sandals and no jacket today. It was sunny in Hale Barns as well this morning, which is where I went to meet some friends. And the garden got mown and tended this afternoon.
today is COLD and RAINY. had to wear a jacket and a Scarlett O'Hara skirt - so called because it is made out of curtain fabric - you need to have read Gone with the Wind. Excellent book
Perhaps Wendy is sending us rain instead of postcards
perhaps she is.
I don't think i have read that but at my last dance school we did a dance called that in the last show. I had a gorg red dress but it doean't fir me now :-(
I wish!!! I wish for... urmmm... actually i don't know.
Off to find something to do in the lovely pile of art, perhaps i'll work into some life drawings again, it would make a nice change from buildings that i have spent all this morning doing!
