Welcome, welcome, sorry about the mess

So this is my blog, it's mainly about Africa and the fact that I'm going there, but it'll probably go on many a tangent before I'm through. Enjoy reading about my adventures, I know I'll enjoy having them.

Tony Hawks eat your heart out.

I spent the bus journey here with a Tanzanian acrobat who's backpacking around africa with a unicycle.

did you try out his unicycle!

glad you are doing okay, I will pray they change your money for you. Being an old lady of 48, I wouldnt like to think of you hitch-hiking. Even tho God would be looking after you.

Take care

Love hugs and prayers

wow! a unicycle? that sounds like it could be a lot of fun...

At 2:14 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

they are very hard to ride, you have to have perfect balance, and it is one of those things you can either do or not, very different from riding a normal bike. Once went to a circus skills workshop and tried it. Couldnt do it. I think it was lack of balance rather than my great rotundity - I am a fat person. Used to be able to juggle and do other things tho like spinning a diabolo. cant now because of the neck.

Apparently going the other way - from two wheels to three instead of two wheels to one, is also very different and hard to get used to, a lovely elderly guy I used know, in his 80s had a tricycle as he was finding his normal bike more difficult, and he said it was whole knew experience to riding a normal bike, it doesnt lean into corners and things.

Wendy, do they cycle much over in Africa, it would seem to be a cheap low tech way of getting around.

...but a unicycle sounds more useful than a fridge... especially backpacking in Africa.

At 7:30 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I can unicycle, or I could last time I tried at least. But that was a fair few years ago now! I wonder how hard it would be to unicycle with a big huge backpack on? Would it actually be a useful mode of transport or would you just end up falling off a lot? hmmm...

At 9:31 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

at least with the backpack you might have softer landing if you did fall off. And more useful than a fridge.

On a more serious note, please could those of you who pray for my aunt, who is very poorly in hospital, and may die, and her grandson, who is 18, who she lives with, who has bit problems - for those of you from CHMC this is Winnie and Simon we are talking about.

thnkas Mike -at the moment she is in the A&E department, waiting for a bed, the same A&E dept where her daughter was unsuccessfully treated almost exactly 2 years ago, daughter was also mother of the grandson who is with her. I am going to try and sleep and have told my mum to do the same, dont know how successful I will be. And tomorrow is mine and Neils silver wedding anniversary. So I want to be okay for that, pain free and stress free

wendy what can I say all these wonderful experiences to store in your mind and re live again and again. don't ever let your memory wear out. And I thought I was good learning how to ride a bike with 2 wheels. I do hope you did have a go even though you may not want us to know the outcome.

looking forward to seeing you in however many days are left - homesickness in reverse. Have you managed to buy another camera to share all those incredible photographs?

It has actually stopped raining here - thought it would never stop so I am going to try outside for lunch. Not under a tree as too many birds visit them but close by.
Lots of love and kisses

Uni-cycle oooh oooh oooh pick me pick me, can i have a go. A must do at some point in my life. I would prefer younger than older but maybe thats just me being picky!

Praying liz. Hope all gets better.

Wendy. wendy. wendy! What shall we do with you? Can i take your brain for a short time to experience what you have and then give it you back? You can have mine in the mean time. It's full of german and BSL at the moment but i'm sure i could arrange for that to change if that be the terms of the agreement.

Sarah with my family at present I feel like I am going round and round a roundabout all the time. not Neil, Lynne and Helen they are fine, but the extended family - parents and aunties.

Tell me, you normal sensible young people - have any of you ever stayed up all night just so you can catch the milkman when he comes at 7.30 a.mm. YOu may have stayed up to pray or to party or to finish an assignment, or because you were worried. But staying up so as not to miss the milkman seems very very odd to me.

My family are mad

So really your excuse for not being able to get regular net access for a while is because you're scared of my wrath, right?

I was convinced it wouldn't be you, you know we need him on a regular basis.

Ah well. Spose by the time you get back I won't be annoyed anymore.

Have fun, look after yourself.

Love, hugs and muchos prayers,

Thanks to those who have been praying for my auntie - we are waiting for results of tests at the moment, things are a little stressful here.

Who is Eric by the way

eric is the very muched loved puppet with bright pink hair! We miss him dearly and would love him back! He has quite a histiry and i'm sure wendy could tell you it, mind you, thug (another puppet) has an even better history so now you know.

usually when i see the milkman i know i've been awake too long. these last few weeks I have been up at 4am most days studying, last exam tomorrow, can't wait for it to be over. i'm also trying to get over a bad case of man flu. grrr @ exams.

At 8:09 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

poor you mike. Prayers! I hope the last exam goes ok!

At 9:36 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

yes, I hope your last exam goes well too - does mean you have reached the end of the academic year?

Sorry about the man flu too - Fairbreak biccies are the answer - I am veyr impressed that Aquinas have a Fairtrade vending machine - Helen loves those biccies.

Could Sharon not post Eric to Susie - although actually, you will be home soon anyway wont you, 27th June.

Hope you are having a great time still, and if you go to Mozambique I hope it is awesome for you.

Oh - and Simon missed the milkman. Was in the bathroom when he came.

Yep, my academic year ends TOMORROW :-) I'm snacking on Tunnucks Caramel Wafers, and getting a vitamin hit with proper squeezed orange juice, not this from concentrate malarky.

Vive le holidays!

:-)

At 12:23 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

prefer the teacakes to the caramel wafers. cant drink orange juice, too sugary for a diabetic. although squeezed is probably okay. The stuff in cartons has more sugar than chocolate or cola.

Just been to a council meeting, I cant believe how horrible and nasty politicians are, they were picking on this one poor man, and being really nasty to him. Okay the guy isnt exactly my best friend either, but he didnt deserve that. Wont be going to any more meetings and might have to change who I vote for!

I am so angry I am fizzing

At 12:32 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

it does to me. I tend to think it is my duty to vote, partly as woman because my ancestors chained themselves to railings so I had the opportunity, but also as a Christian, to play my part in making sure we are governed by the people God wants us to be governed by. I only know the religious backgrounds of five of the 20 or so people last night - there were two Jewish ladies, who fell asleep (!) and myself and the people I was with who are Christian - the guy being hounded is Christian.

I feel very disillusioned with the political process today.

and very tired, lots of stress due to aunt being ill

sorry, Wendy, I am using your blog to hold a pity party. Promise not to do it again. Hope you are well and having fun

Tony Hawks is a British comedian and author... he once hitch-hiked around Ireland with a Fridge (hence the reference to him!) His latest book is apparently about moving to France and in particular transporting a piano through the Pyrenees!

http://www.tony-hawks.com/

Also...

"None of the Above" is from Brewsters Millions.. he wants to lose money, so he doesn't want to be elected, hence the slogan.

At 2:32 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Thanks for that Andy. At the moment I think I will write "none of the above anyway" as I wont lose money if I do!

never heard of Tony Hawks, but then dont watch the more modern comedy because I actually often dont understand it. My family laugh at people like Steve Coogan (Alan Partridge) but I dont much. Actually, his brother his funnier. Nice guy his brother, isnt he Sarah. I dont mind Peter Kay tho sometimes

But have to admit to liking the old repeats of sit coms on the cable channels. Probably coz I am old.

At 5:17 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

tony hawks is also a world famous skateboarder, world champion many times.

p.s: not the same one

At 10:07 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

thanks - I have never really done much skateboarding, I did try Helen's one time, but I am big lady, and I felt sort of out of control on it. and a bit silly really on a super mario bros skateboard. I would kinda love to have a real go on one in the half-pipes, but wouldnt have the nerve, especially with the bad neck. I like that song, Heaven is a half-pipe.

hadnt realised there were world champion skateboarders.

I remember that thing in Heaton Park a year or two back which had that fantastic skateboard thingy, it looked wonderful. Okay, used the word thing a lot there. Not had much sleep, just taken pain killers, am old, and stressed about auntie. I am sure you people know what I mean, a big Christian event.

Wendy, hope you are well, still praying for you

Liz

Glad the exams are finished, what will you do now til October. Is this the end of your first year, or are you further into the course than that?

At 4:10 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

liz your talking about festival manchester in heaton park. As for the skaters there. I'm sorry to say but some of the just randomers seemed better than the pro's! Ah well, it was all good to watch anyway and i was very impressed as i didn't get sun burt. I do easily! Pale skin and all that.

Mike, i've only got exams so life isn't too hectic for me. i.e. i don't have to get up early if i don't want to. The fact that i probably will is compeltly irrelevant! (i'm a morning person)

wendy wendy wendy, where art thou?

At 5:32 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wendy is probably in Mozambique. But she doesnt seem to mind that we carry on without her, I asked her, off blog.

I am not a morning person, and at the moment I am not an evening person, I am more a lunchtime person. Currently feel fairly awake, but this wont last - due to the pain meds. have just been through several thousand old photos tryong to find ones for my dads memory book. There are about 30+ years of photos, in no particular order, in a drawer - and some of them are in those wallets and some arent, but they arent necessarily in the right wallets. Learn from my mistake, when you take photos, put them in an album and label them THAT DAY.

As you people procrastinate from revision, I am procrastinating from finishing this book

Yes it was festival mancehster, I remember now - didnt really notice who were pro and who were random on the skateboard thing.

Lynne has just set off to Woodbank Park for this big deal thingy. With masses of stuff because since she is going with St A's youth she has to remember to take things that the young people will forget. ANd apparently Woodbank Park is like a swamp with all the rain,

waffle over

Liz

At 3:56 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Woodbank Park, I was there this evening. It was The Big Deal, Stockport one. Several bands played, there were speakers and otehr activities. It was however freezing and muddy and gross. :-)

At 7:57 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

that is pretty much what Lynne (eldest daughter) said - she was there with St Andrew's youth, she is a youth worker there, part time unpaid. But she did say the great thing was that she saw people there who she had seen around the area on Saturday when they were all litterpicking, gardening, graffitti removing etc. Social Evangelism - help people in inexpected and practical ways like that, til they ask why, then hit them with the Gospel message.

We are saved by Grace, but our works can help other to be saved by making them aware of Jesus Christ and his Grace. That is kinda deep for 3.19 am, but doesnt make it any less true. matthew whatever, the sheep and goats bit. Whatsoever you do for these the least of my people this you do for Me. I try to live that every day, and the Serenity Prayer - God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference. It is the last bit I struggle with, I do tend to try and change the world a bit too much, and that is really God's job, although I am His for the using to help Him achieve it. He has no hands but our hands.

I came across a wonderful quote from Mother Teresa, it is lovely about our work being a drop in the ocean, but without that drop the ocean would be less. Can I find the quote now, can i heck.

I am involved with something called Size Acceptance --most of you have met me and knowthat I am a fat person. Through the size acceptance group on the internet I have come to accept and love myself, and my shape and size, and to accept that it is the body God has given me, and that I can be healthy and happy as I am. My current health issues are unrelated to my size. Many of the people on the list are Native American, and so I was surprised to see a Mother Teresa quote, mostly the quotes are from a NA Chief. If you are reading this Dave, these are the place I (gently) proselytise. They know I am a Christian. I have to say, there is a lot of wisdom in NA beliefs, but of course not the Salvation of Jesus Christ. There are other Christians on the list - will have to find out who sent the quote.

I love the story of Gladys Aylward, who used to pray each night for blue eyes, but of course, never got them. Then she had to lead all those children to safety from wherever it was - out in China or similar, and was able to darken her skin with mud and pass as a native, but would have been sussed immediately if she had had blue eyes. God knows what He is doing. Nothing is by accident where He is concerned. Later today I am going to visit my Mormon friend - she divorced her husband because he was physically beating her and her sons, and so her vicar said she was a sinner and couldnt receive communion any more. (this was about 30 years ago). So she stopped going to church, then a while later, the Mormons came knocking and the accepted her divorce and she joined. She still has mostly ANglican beliefs, and no longer goes to the services much. Pity she doesnt live nearer, I would have had her at CHMC long ago. Dont make me spell that word again, but I do that to her too, so do quite a few of us.

This is nearly a sermon.

Goodnight God Bless

Liz

Me again with the Mother Teresa quote

We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But if that drop was not in the ocean, I think the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.

it's raining; if only 'twere night I would go out to dance in it, but as it happens, I have to leave for work in half an hour. and still not dressed! however, I have just finished reading my Italian lit. text by Italo Calvino, about a boy who spends his life in the trees. keep it up!

cool quote liz.

do i take it make that you personally didn't enjoy space in woodbank park????

At 2:22 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I did not go to Woodbank Park Sarah. I am sure it was wonderful. However, I am supposedly resting this week. And next Sunday my dad is 80, and I am making a book for him, of peoples anecdotes and comments and memories of him, and it has to be at the bookbinder by tomorrow, so I am spending all my time finishing it. Today I must not procrastinate. Plus woodbank will have been cold, and I am not to let neck get too cold as it goes all spasmy and yukky.

Did you enjoy it? I think probably it was aimed more at your age than mine anyway

I am now going to get on with this book. Ever start something and wish you hadnt!

At 5:33 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

i didn't go liz. hmmmm,i'll see if i can find someone who went to tell me what it was like.

Good luck with getting the book finished. Oh and by the way, i have found my fairy wings!!!!YEY!

At 7:16 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Lynne went. But she hasnt said much. I am procrastinating badly, this is awful. and I am coming down with a cold, which is bad coz I am taking Kathryn to Chemo tomorrow and cant if it is cold - we will see what it does over the next hour or two.

Glad you found your fairy wings, I have fairy wings too. They are a very important part of a woman's wardrobe. I also have a teddy bear costume, another important part of a womans wardrobe

Liz

At 8:56 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

not got as far as the teddy bear costume yet! Should i make one out of curtain material?hehe

Liz if your reading this then unless you have finished the book, go get back on with it. Oh and i do hope that you are not coming down with a cold. they aren't nice things. x x x

At 1:04 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It would have to be furry curtain material.

Yes, I will go and get back on with it, but after a while it gets boring, and I am trying to find a picture to go with everything people have written. And photos of some of the people are 25 years old because they come from our wedding album.

Cold seems better, perhaps it wasnt.

Just a reminder to The Sacrament, Wendy may not get to a computer until 10th June and with having no phone, we are unlikely to hear anything for the next few days. I'm her mum and I'm concerned (as we all are) but all we can do is have patience. I do keep checking in the hope of an extra update but no luck yet.

At 6:02 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Amanda - no news is good news in situations like this, if Wendy had a problem she would have phoned either her family, or her Great Hieghts friends to ask for prayer - although she has no mobile, she would have found a way. God is looking after her, okay, I might not be this laid back if it was one of my two, but I am sure she really is okay.

Sacrament, why did you make the 51st as well?

Sarah, my cold came back as sneezes and cough, probably hayfever, but couldnt take the risk of taking Kathryn.

Liz

At 6:22 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

poor you liz. I do hope that whatever it is doesn't cause too many problems.

Sacrament, did you make the 51st as well because it's fun or by accident?

I'm guessing that wendy is ok as i too have heard nothing.

praying for her. She was prayed for in church on sunday. We haven't forgotten her!

I do hope that everyone else is ok.

I'll go do some more work now before mike tells me off!

but remember to get the work life balance Sarah, and dont work too hard!

Have just been to Tesco as we needed food - Neil has to come too as I cant push the trolley. Think this was a mistake, will now go for a sleep

Can I just say that although I know Wendy likes to keep up with what is going on in all our lives it is going to take her ages and therefore cost her lots of money the next time she goes into an internet cafe just to read these comments, she is short of money and I just worry that this will not help that situation.

At 7:23 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ah, but Wendy doesnt need to read the chat stuff until she gets home

At 4:07 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

ah but how does she know what is chat stuff and what relates to her without reading it.
