Ode to the Beautiful Game
Man three football matches in one day, that's just wrong. It's quite interesting watching international matches here though, people tend to support both teams at the same time-saves any dissappointment. A lot of the time they'll support individual players too, no-one cares about Australia but they all support Harry Kewell because he plays in the English League. Will be interesting to watch an England game out here-see if I can convert everyone. Also everyone tends to band together to get behind any African team (unlike in England where we all go against the rest of Europe out of spite) so last night I became an honourary Tanzanian/Ghanian. I was never that into football back home but here they don't support any particular team or country, the Tanzanian side are beyond dismal so patriotosm would be a litle lost on them anyway. It sounds cliche but they really do watch just for the love of the game. And I have to admit I can sort of see why. Once you stop rooting for one team over another and just watch it for the sake of being a part of it, it really is a beutiful game.
That said the Italians are still a bunch of cry baby drama queens (stretchered off then runs back on and scores, that's just not cricket, or football in this case) and if England don't steam roller Trinidad I'll eat my proverbial hat. I'll be a football pacifist until there's national pride at stake, then it get's oh so very personal.
Crazy to think that I'll be watching the final at home, or more likely down the pub. Any pub.
England v Brazil, who's with me?...
*tumbleweed*
No-one, thought as much.

If itis England v Brazil I think Brazil will win!
But being old I remember England winning in 66. We didnt have a TV, and had called into a neighbour on the way shopping and ended up staying and watching the match, and then shopping - we were going to buy mat for the kitchen, made of something called "Dandycord" which was basically plastic strips woven together. In a fit of patriotism they bought a red and white one, which clashed with the kitchen.
Glad you are okay, Wendy, still praying for you
love hugs and prayers

The only downside to the world cup so far , is that I have missed some episodes of Neighbours. Ah well, COME ON ENGLAND!
Lip P, I mean, Mike
Good to see all this travelling hasn't affected the fact that you're as nutty as a fruit cake.
Love you loads and can't wait to see you when you get back honey.
Matt says love you too.

wendy, say what you want but i have just enjoyed two of my three general studies papers! the last one is next week but today was fun. sadly no biology on the peper though :-(
Sarah, Helen did the General Studies too, havent seen her since, she has been at work, so dont know how they went.
I havent watched any football either, and havent dont any revision because HEY, I am not doing any exams this year. But next year I am doing AS Latin, and have to choose my set texts over the next couple of weeks - it is between Aeneid 10, Ovid's Amore, or Tacitus Annals 1, and I can do one or two, if I do only one I have to do more of it. I am 48, and doing AS level Latin. Am I crazy?
Liz

I love Ron Weasley!
But does he love you back Hermione? Although I havent read the books and seen the films, I am guessing this is a reference to Harry Potter?
Wendy where are you and how are you and when do you meet Augustino, I will pray for that
Liz

I have a date for my piano exam...Finally.
Everything else - Meh!
Just watched Save the Last Dance. Has anyone got recomendations for Chick Fliks for next time I want to see one, that I haven't already seen 3 times?
Well I am a bit old to be a chick, but some good "hen flicks" are around too. If you have a long time to watch it, Gone with the Wind is wonderful, so romantic, but with action too, I love it. Again Casablance is wonderful, so old it is in black and white. Things like My Fair Lady you have probably seen, but again lovely and romantic. If you like Jane Austen, the old version of Pride of Prejudice is good, with I think Laurence Olivier as Darcy, but I may be wrong, and the old version of Jane Eyre as well. Most video libraries have them - and you are very handy for your nearest one! Back to the old movies, High Society with Bing Crosby is good, as are many of his films which cant remember the name of. Another one I loved, havent seen for ages, is called Penny Serenade, and another is Breakfast at Tiffanys. I suggest you look at Blockbuster for their "oldies" section, and also look to see what is on Turner Classic Movies, and tape things that might be okay to watch when you need them. I have watched the full set of the recent BBC series of Pride and Prejudice many times. Colin Firth being rather pleasant on the eye, especially in that wet shirt. The film was okay, but not the same without that scene in it.
I will ask Lynne for ideas, being older than you she will have ones which were out before you got interested in them.
Wendy, how are you, less than 10 days left now
love hugs and prayers
Liz
Hi Liz Just looked it up on Wendy's original itinerary and its the 22nd when she goes to meet Augustino.
Can't Wait now till you get back chick, I bet we won't even recognise you you'll be so skinny and tanned.
Cheers Liz. In return, some great newer ones are:
10 things I hate about you
Save the Last Dance
Mean Girls
The Notebook
Love Actually
Notting Hill
About a boy (Ok, so not STRICTLY a Chick Flik but who's counting?)
err....ok all I can currently think of but here are of course more.
And Blockbuster isn't actually that good. They have like, 20 copies of the current top 20 list, but the actual selection is crap.
Hi Suzie, here's some older chick flicks that I remember watching with my mates at school:
Dirty dancing (no idea what the recent remake was like, but the original one was good)
Robin hood prince of thieves (or anything else with Christian Slater in! I loved 'pump up the volume' it's not exactly a chick flick but as you said, who's counting?)
Pretty in pink
An officer and a gentleman
Mystic pizza
Four weddings and a funeral
Oh - and it's not an oldie but if you haven't seen 'Saved' I recommend you watch it!
Notting Hill is good, I like anything with Julia Roberts. Dirty Dancing is good too. Havent been to Blockbuster for years, we rarely hire videos or DVDs. I get cross with films about Robin Hood, they are usually so inaccurate. He is thought to have been Robert Earl of Loxley, whose mother was an ancestor of mine, so I have read a lot about RH. Although from watching Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, if you know either of my daughters, it could certainly be proof of our descendence from RH and Maid Marian. (Yes I am joking, and you will only understand this if you know my daughters).
Has anyone seen the Da Vinci Code? Not a chick flick of course.
Liz
Great Heights went to see it last weekend.... I was on fuel duty so missed it unfortunately.
wheeee, just had the bsl level two exam and if thats what uni's gonna be like i have some serious practise to do! it wasn't that bad at all but i still have some practise to be done!!!
Sarah, I was praying for you. I hope it went well. And there will be people at uni who are not as good as you, so dont worry about it.
Lynne says: (but comments in brackets are mine)
Sweet Home Alabama
Singing in the Rain (I like this one too)
My Best Friends Wedding
Sliding Doors
Phantom of the Opera
Two Weeks notice
Emma
A Cinderella Story
The Importance of being Earnest
Bridget Jones - both of them (Colin Firth is in that one too??)
A Knights Tale
50 First Dates
Madagascar (Cartoon but sooooooo cute)
Lynne has most of these, and many many others. She also has lots of Disney stuff, she loves Disney. Yes she is 24 the week after next!
Of course Simon (as in Winnie and Simon who we pray for every week) has thousands of DVDs, literally, but they are nasty violent horror films.
Liz
disney is great and i am sure wendy will agree!
Lynne loves Disney and has many Disney DVDs - didnt realise you were a Disney fan as well Wendy
Liz
Ooh, Knights Tale, forgot about that. Sliding Doors was excellent as well as is Bridget Jones (the books, and the films, all of them).
Another one people haven't mentioned yet is my big fat greek wedding which i thought was fun. Ooh, and Greese!
And I have seen the original Dirty Dancing (not the new one though) and was rather dissapointed - it didn't actually have any kind of real storyline. I thought Something about Mary was crap too.
And I've just thought of a new one me and Chris watched the other week that was really good - The Rumour. It's got Jennifer Anniston in it as the lead.
No one has yet mentioned:
"Shakespeare in Love"
or
"Moulin Rouge"
and how about
"The Princess Bride" (does that count?)
also I hear "Beaches" (1988) is a very good Chick flick, and who can forget "Thelma and Louise" (1991)
I'll stop now.
RE: Ode To The Beautiful Game:
FOund a mention of Dandycord in your Blog purely by chance. My Father worked at W H Armes, the manufacturer of Dandycord, and I recall him bringing home a sample of a red and white one, it may well have been part of yours! He also said that they had made a special order for the QE2, a mat that was 100 yds long.
Yours,
Martin Grimwood, London, England
